Langgai Tinggai
The langgai tinggai is one of the rarest swords of the Iban Dayak and are very scarce. This example dates from the end of 19th century and is preserved in an exceptional condition.
The antler handle has the pommel nicely carved with the typical motives and still retains the original tufts of hair, the grip is covered with brass wire and the resin ferrule is still present and complete.
The curved blade made for "business" is very well balanced and ends with a false edge. There are nice designs engraved on both sides of the blade.
The wood scabbard is made of two halves being the outside much darker. The tip is decorated with a little but nice carving. All the rattan knots are present creating with their reddish color an attractive effect over the dark wood, a combination seldom seen.
The langgai tinggai is 64,5 cm long inside the scabbard and 62,5 cm long outside, the blade is 50 cm long and has a thickness at the beginning of the spine of 5,5 mm.
Unfortunately the rattan belt is lost and there are some little losses in the rattan (all shown in pictures) otherwise the sword and scabbard are in great condition.
A beautiful and complete sword with its scabbard something that makes it even more scarce.
