19th C. Barong

Antique Moro Barong from the Sulu archipelago in South Philippines.
Hardwood handle beautifully grained with elongated pommel (Junggayan style) and silver ferrule, usually the barongs with junggayan hilts belonged to persons of a certain status.
Strong and laminated hollowed blade known as Shandigan with very nice pattern, the idea behind this type of blades was to lighten the blade without sacrificing its integrity, in this example the shandigan technique is very smooth.
The barong is 55,4 cm long with a blade of 36,3 cm and a thickness near the hilt of approx. 7 mm.
Very old minor chips on pommel and ferrule (all shown in pictures) otherwise in very good condition.
An old and quality barong that comes from a Spanish panoply of 19th century philippines weapons captured during the spanish colonization.
