 19th C. Moro Kris

Beautiful and quality moro kris from Maranao in South Philippines with a rare silver plated handle. It was found together with another one in a panoply from an old Spanish collection that belonged to a Police Captain in Madrid and were brought from the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period.

As I said before this is a kris of quality maybe made for someone of certain status but it is a real battle kris too, very sharp and sturdy for its size. The robust handle with a big and prominent pommel is made of wood covered in silver plated brass and entirely carved with a nice mix of straight and curvy lines and secured to the blade with a steel clamp (baka-baka). The laminated and wavy blade very well executed is surprisingly broad for its length making it wider than others from similar size. In the center of the blade there is an engraving running parallel to the edge, an stylized design that I think represents the naga the mythical sea serpent, maybe a symbol of its lethality.

The kris is 60,5 cm long with a very nice laminated blade of 46,5 cm and a width of 4 cm in the first curve.

Condition: Some losses in the silver plating otherwise in great condition.

An opportunity to get a beautiful kris with a type of handle rarely seen.
